MESA, Ariz. (Oct. 1, 2009) -- Martha Walters snapped pictures of her husband, Kevin and their son Jacob, 3, making crafts.
The Queen Creek mother enjoyed the moment. Three years ago, the odds didn't seem like they were in her son's favor, she said. Jacob was born weighing a pound and half. But he survived to play his first soccer game last weekend.
On Sunday, her family was one of a hundreds that reunited with nurses and doctors of Cardon Children's Medical Center's neonatal intensive care unit. The reunion was the first in seven years.
Who benefited the most?
Lines of families came to see Glenn Waterkotte, medical director for the NICU, and thank him for the care they and their children received.
Waterkotte said it's part of the hospital's total-care concept.
"The goal in the NICU at Cardon Children's is to care for not only the baby, but the entire family."
