GLENDALE, Ariz. (Sept. 25, 2009) -- Hospitals can be scary places, especially when you’re going there to have a procedure done.
That was the case this April for Dave and Kathy Chapman from Phoenix. Dave was going to Banner Thunderbird Hospital in Glendale to have a kidney stone removed. Kathy was a bundle of nerves.
“It’s very nerve-racking,” Kathy said. “You want everything to go right and you want your honey to feel better.”
When the Chapmans got the hospital, they were greeted by a hospital volunteer named Peggy Hodgson.
Hodgson is 95 years old. She has been volunteering at the hospital for the last 25 years.
On this April day, Hodgson grabbed Kathy’s hand and wouldn’t let it go. She prayed with Kathy that Dave’s operation would go well. They also prayed for the doctor. Then she spent time comforting Kathy through the scary time.
“She was just easing my mind,” Kathy said.
“She was just like a little angel,” Dave added.
Dave agreed that Hodgson played multiple roles that day: part hospital ambassador, part tour guide and part therapist. For all that she had done, Dave asked to pay it forward to Hodgson.
So CBS 5 News gave Dave $500, and on Thursday, he gave it to her.
