MESA, Ariz. (Sept. 8, 2008) – The Banner Baywood Medical Center Sleep Disorders Program was reaccredited this month by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Accreditation.
Banner Baywood’s Sleep Disorders Program was the first accredited program in the East Valley. It is now one of nine sleep centers in the state.
The academy accreditation is the gold standard by which the medical community and the public can evaluate the serves provided by a sleep center or lab. The standards for accreditation ensure that sleep medicine providers display and maintain proficiency in areas such as testing procedures and policies, patient safety and follow-up, and physician and staff training.
Banner Baywood Medical Center's Sleep Disorders Program has been serving the East Valley of the metro Phoenix area since 2001. The fully-accredited Sleep Disorders Program offered at Banner Baywood Medical Center assists physicians in recognizing sleep disturbances including breathing, narcolepsy, insomnia, snoring, parasomnias and circadian-rhythm disorders.
The Sleep Disorders Program can help in diagnosing and treating sleep-related disorders, including sleep apnea, excessive sleepiness, movement disorders, insomnia and other sleep/wake schedule problems.
The Baywood staff includes registered sleep technologists, who are specially trained in sleep-monitoring techniques, and physicians, who are board-certified in sleep medicine. Specialty consultants with certification in pulmonary diseases, neurology and psychology also are available to assist in diagnosis and treatment.
Established in 1975 as the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) is the only professional society that is dedicated exclusively to the medical subspecialty of sleep medicine. As the leading voice in the field of sleep medicine, the AASM sets standards and promotes excellence in health care, education and research.
It has more than 7,000 physicians, researchers and other health care professionals as members. These members specialize in studying, diagnosing and treating disorders of sleep and daytime alertness such as insomnia, narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea.
