Banner Casa Grande Foundation Receives Komen CAN Arizona Mammography Grant
Casa Grande, Ariz. (June 3, 2014) – Susan G. Komen® Central and Northern Arizona (Komen CAN AZ) has awarded a $42,924 grant to the Banner Casa Grande Medical Center Foundation for free screening mammograms and diagnostic services for uninsured and underinsured women in Pinal County.
These funds from Komen CAN AZ will support Banner Casa Grande Medical Center's Breast Center outreach initiative to women without financial resources or health insurance. The program will cover digital screening mammograms for women who qualify. Women with areas of concern or who receive abnormal results will be aided by the certified Breast Center Coordinator, Rebecca Fleuret, as she navigates them through the process of further testing to determine a diagnosis. Additional diagnostic testing covered by the grant includes digital screening mammograms, breast ultrasound, and breast biopsy (stereotactic or ultrasound guided). To qualify and register for an exam through this grant, patients may call the Breast Care Coordinator at (520) 381-6744.
“We are so appreciative of Komen CAN AZ’s continued support of women in Pinal County through this grant. Since it is estimated that 19% of the population in Pinal County is uninsured, programs like this one may be the only way these women have of protecting themselves from undetected breast cancer. Pinal County has the fifth highest mortality rate from breast cancer in Arizona and the fourth highest incidence rate. Over the past two grant years, we have provided over 200 screening mammograms and aided three women in detecting breast cancer, as well as helped them to obtain lifesaving treatment,” explained Fleuret.
In April, Komen CAN AZ gave more than $1.2 million to fund breast cancer screening, education, treatment and research. More than $850,000 will fund 10 community grants throughout central and northern Arizona, while more than $390,000 will go toward international research efforts. Since its inception in 1993, Komen CAN AZ has granted more than $25.4 million – making it the largest private grantor of community breast cancer funds in Arizona.
The community grants program helps Komen CAN AZ to carry out its mission of saving lives and ending breast cancer forever by partnering with nonprofit organizations throughout medically underserved communities to fill in the critical gaps of service.
“Part of delivering our promise is working day to day with our community partners to ensure that the women in our community do not go without vital screening and treatment services while we navigate the changing healthcare landscape, both locally and nationwide,” said Heather Roberts, executive director for Komen CAN AZ. “Collaboration is key to reaching our goal, and we’re fortunate to work with so many organizations whose missions align with ours.”
The Komen CAN AZ community grants program is funded by money raised at the annual Susan G. Komen Phoenix Race for the Cure® held each October. Key to the Affiliate’s Race fundraising efforts is sponsor support, which allows Komen’s dollars to go even farther. Komen CAN AZ is grateful to welcome back Fry’s Food Stores as its VIP Partner for the 2014 Race. Race registration will open in spring 2014.
