PHOENIX (Sept. 5, 2008) – Banner Health is one of a record number of national, regional, state and local organizations participating in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s fifth annual National Preparedness Month.
Throughout September, Banner Health will be encouraging its staff and their families, its physicians, and the communities it serves to take action and prepare in advance for emergencies.
“We see providing this type of guidance for preparedness as an important part of our nonprofit mission. Everyone can and should be involved in making their families and communities more prepared,’’ said Tina Field, program director, Emergency Management Training and Exercises.
Banner Health, which is comitted to being ready incase of widespread disaster, offers this preparedness information:
- Get emergency supply kits for your family
- Have a kit at home, one in the car, and one at work.
- Include basic supplies for your family and pets for three days in your kits.
- Make a family preparedness plan
- Sit down as a family and plan in advance.
- Remember that you may not be together as a family when the emergency occurs, so plan in advance how to get in touch with each other.
- Consider your family’s unique needs, e.g., elderly parents or other individuals with special needs.
- Be informed
- Learn about the different types of emergencies and the appropriate responses to them.
- Determine which emergencies are most likely to impact your area.
- Take advantage of free awareness training available in your community.
- Get involved
- Promote emergency preparedness at faith-based organizations’ meetings, HOA meetings, or clubs to which you may belong.
- Include preparedness activities at community events.
- Work with your local pet store, veterinarian practice, or animal shelter.
- Volunteer with an organization that works with older Americans or individuals with special needs.
- Join your local Citizens Corps or volunteer with the Red Cross.
