NCMC Spirit of Women event gives insight to depression in men and women

GREELEY, Colo. (Sept. 8, 2009) — Two experts from North Colorado Medical Center’s Behavioral Health team will provide information on depression for men and women at an upcoming Spirit of Women event.

“Feeling Flat? Depression: Facts, Fears and Fables” will be Wednesday, Sept. 16 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the NCMC Auditorium, 1801 16th St. in Greeley. The discussion is free and open to the public.

Charles Howard, PhD, and Renee Rogers, a licensed marriage and family therapist, work with the Behavioral Health department and will answer questions and explain how depression affects the sexes differently.

“Symptoms and presentation is different,” Rogers said. Also, the level of depression varies. Some people experience mild depression and can care for themselves. Others have severe depression and need professional intervention.

What are some of the differences between men and women when it comes to depression?

“If asked if they are depressed, men will say no. If asked if they’re unhappy, they’ll say yes because it doesn’t carry the same weight as depression,” Rogers said. “Men get more agitated and angry. Women get more sad and morose.”

She added that there can be physical pain, headaches and fatigue associated with depression.

The pair will go over the signs and symptoms of depression, treatment options and when to see a professional or refer a loved one for professional help.
