Phoenix [Nov. 8, 2004] -- The Donor Network of Arizona (DNA) has recognized Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center (BGSMC) in Phoenix for its contributions to the Organ Donation Breakthrough Collaborative, a component of the Gift of Life Initiative launched in 2003. The organ donation "Best Practice" award was presented to Banner Good Samaritan on Nov. 5 at the Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association Leadership Conference.
Since establishing a partnership with the DNA and the Breakthrough Collaborative, BGSMC has helped increase the number of organ donors statewide to 23,765 -- of those, more than 1,000 are Banner employees.
As a result of its awareness and education initiatives, BGSMC played a key role in increasing Arizona's donation rate by 87 percent for the year.
The recently initiated non-directed live donor kidney transplant program and the collaboration with the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury in the Banner Health Donor Team help promote organ donation on both a facility and a system level.
