Banner Health names CEO for Banner Good Samaritan

PHOENIX (June 25, 2007) – Late last week Susan Edwards, president of Banner Health’s Arizona Region, announced the appointment of Larry Volkmar as the new chief executive officer for Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix. He takes the helm at one of the largest hospitals in the state on Monday, July 16.

Volkmar comes to Banner Health from Sinai Health System in Chicago. There he served as president of Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital and Sinai Children’s Hospital. He has also previously worked in a consulting role with Arthur Andersen LLP, and held a variety of leadership positions for other nonprofit and for-profit hospital systems over his 29-year career including eight years at the University of Chicago Hospitals as chief nursing officer and vice president of operations.

Volkmar holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from St. Louis University in Missouri, and a Master’s of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University in Iowa. Volkmar’s first health care role was as a staff nurse, and he maintains his nursing license today. He offers expertise in operationally-focused hospital management, strengthening employee culture and building physician partnerships.

Located in downtown Phoenix, Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center has been providing medical care to Arizona and the Southwest since 1911. Banner Good Samaritan is owned and operated by Phoenix-based Banner Health, a nonprofit organization. The hospital was named to U.S.News & World Report’s America’s Best Hospitals report in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Heart Care and Surgery, and Endocrinology. It has also been recognized as a Magnet facility by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the highest honor a hospital can earn for its nursing care.

Banner Good Samaritan is a Level I Trauma Center, a Level III Perinatal Center and a major medical teaching hospital with 220 residents and fellows annually. The Banner Good Samaritan campus is home to the Banner Poison Control Center, the Banner Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Institute, the City of Hope-Banner Bone Marrow Transplant Program and Banner Alzheimer’s Institute.
