Triplets, Quadruplets, Quintuplets and Sextuplets all in line for delivery at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix

PHOENIX (May 14, 2007) – At Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, we do birth-days in a big way! This downtown Phoenix hospital, known nationally for high-risk obstetrics and the delivery of high-order multiples (triplets or more), is awaiting the arrival of triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets and sextuplets simultaneously.

While it is understandably difficult to confirm, we believe this to be a first in U.S. hospitals.

Expecting moms and their families have come to Phoenix from across the country for care and delivery due to the established expertise of perinatalogist John Elliott, M.D., his colleagues at Phoenix Perinatal Associates (PPA), and the staff at Banner Good Samaritan. The families that make up our current run of multiples – there are two sets of quadruplets in the mix – come to us from Florida, Georgia, Texas and Arizona.

Moms-to-be receive specialized care by PPA physicians, who excel in assisting moms to get further into their high-risk deliveries while actively minimizing expected complications. This type of pregnancy clearly presents significant risk to mother and babies, but maintaining pregnancies longer most often equates to healthier babies, shorter hospital stays after birth and reduced costs for treatment.

Following delivery, babies are cared for by the staff at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, who operates a special Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) inside Banner Good Samaritan. The partnership between these two hospitals allows moms and babies to be only an elevator ride away from one another to assure plenty of bonding time after delivery.

Banner Good Samaritan has delivered about 75 sets of quadruplets and five sets of quintuplets to date. This is our second set of sextuplets. The majority of the quintuplets delivered at Banner Good Samaritan – and more than half of the quadruplets – have come to Phoenix from another part of the country. One set of quadruplets arrived from Russia. This is thought to be most sets of high-order multiples than has been delivered at any other hospital in the U.S., and perhaps the world.

Discovery Health Channel (“BirthDay”) and Discovery Channel (“Maternity Ward”) have both filmed documentaries at Banner Good Samaritan on the topic of high-risk obstetrics.

Located in downtown Phoenix, Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center has been providing medical care to Arizona and the Southwest since 1911. Banner Good Samaritan is owned and operated by Phoenix-based Banner Health, a not-for-profit organization. The hospital was named to U.S.News & World Report’s America’s Best Hospitals report in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Heart Care and Heart Surgery, and Endocrinology. We have also been recognized as a Magnet facility by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the highest honor a hospital can earn for its nursing care.
