Couple's Donation Brings Cancer Center to Sterling campus

STERLING, Colo. (Dec.16, 2008) -- Sterling Regional MedCenter and Banner Health today announced the construction of a local Cancer Center made possible by the generosity of Sterling residents Frank and Gloria Walsh.  The Walshes have provided Sterling Regional MedCenter and the Banner Health Foundation with a gift of $8.8 million to build the David Walsh Cancer Center at Sterling Regional MedCenter on the Sterling campus.

The cancer center will offer radiation oncology, chemotherapy and infusion services, tumor registry, a physicians’ clinic, and a patient education center.  All of these services will be in an 8,600-square-foot building next to the hospital.

Radiation oncology services at the center will be a satellite to the radiation oncology program found at the Cancer Institute at North Colorado Medical Center, a sister Banner Health hospital.  Centennial Radiation Oncology, the radiation oncology group at the Cancer Institute, will provide medical direction for these services in Sterling.

The building and operation of the David Walsh Cancer Center will meet the need of Northeastern Colorado residents who no longer will have to travel long distances for such care.  “Our community has expressed the need for a center like this in Sterling for many years,” explained Michelle Joy, Sterling Regional MedCenter Chief Executive Officer.  “Thanks to the generosity of Frank and Gloria Walsh, we will be able to create a cancer center under one roof that will offer a continuum of cancer care for patients and their families.  The addition of the radiation oncology service line is just one more way we are able to achieve our mission of making a difference in people’s lives through excellent patient care.

“The creation of a cancer center at Sterling Regional MedCenter will truly enhance the level of oncology services provided in Northeastern Colorado.”

Joy said the Cancer Center is expected to open in the Spring 2010.
