Give back while giving thanks at the NCMC Blood Donor Center
GREELEY, Colo. (Nov. 11, 2008) — Donating blood during the month of November could put a little extra money in your pocket this holiday season with the “Give Back While Giving Thanks” promotion at the Blood Donor Center at North Colorado Medical Center. All blood donors who donate at the Blood Donor Center or at one of their mobile blood drives through Nov. 28 can register to win a $500 Visa card. One lucky winner will be drawn Dec. 1 just in time for holiday shopping.
“November and December are always the toughest months during the year to keep enough blood donations coming in,” said Becky Rushold, Blood Donor Services supervisor. “By donating, not only will you have the opportunity to help save a life and prevent blood shortages this holiday season, but you might also have an extra $500 to spend during the holidays.”
The need for blood never takes a holiday. During the winter holiday season, the blood supply traditionally suffers massive shortages for a number of reasons. With donors traveling and preoccupied with other holiday-related activities, collections typically suffer between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. This collection shortfall, together with an increased demand caused by more frequent holiday travel, creates a potentially dangerous situation as demand for blood and blood products begins to outpace the supply. For this reason, it is crucial that all eligible donors give at least once during the winter months in an effort to make sure there is life-saving blood available.
Each day, the Blood Donor Center must collect 50 units of blood to meet the need of local patients. North Colorado Medical Center is the only nonprofit organization that provides needed blood products for hospital patients at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, East Morgan County Hospital in Brush and Sterling Regional Medical Center.
