Free arts program offered at Phoenix Art Museum and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
PHOENIX (May 27, 2009) — The Arts Engagement Program is now enrolling community members in the early to moderate stages of the disease and their care partners for two free summer sessions.
Banner Alzheimer’s Institute Arts Engagement Program is an innovative program connecting people with Alzheimer’s disease/dementia and their caregivers to the arts. Research suggests that participation in the arts may improve brain function, increase social engagement and stimulate creative expression.
Results in recent research involving visual arts in people with dementia have caused many to rethink the capacity of the brain to formulate new or untapped creative expressions.
This two-year program will enroll a group of people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease and their care partners. The Arts Engage Program is funded by grants from MPAC, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, the Nina Manson Pulliam Trust and St. Luke’s Health Initiative.
Participants attend six events at either the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art or the Phoenix Art Museum. The program is free of charge.
Events take place:
- Wednesday, June 10, 10:30 a.m. to noon – Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, 7374 E. 2nd Street in Scottsdale
- Thursday, June 11, 1 to 2:30 p.m. – Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 N. Central Avenue in Phoenix
Sessions run for six weeks. Space is limited. You must register to attend. For more information, please contact Vicki McAllister at (602) 239-6928.
