Banner Alzheimer’s Institute  partners to provide free memory screenings

SURPRISE, Ariz. (March 15, 2009) — Memory loss can affect anyone. Often, the aggravation of losing the car keys or the inability to recall the name of a familiar face can be attributed to a “senior moment,” the inability to instantly recall something familiar. But sometimes, memory impairment can be a warning sign of a serious health problem.

That’s why Banner Alzheimer’s Institute,  The Hellen and John M. Jacobs Independence Plaza are teaming up to offer a community screening event in May for people concerned about their memory. Attendees will receive a free memory screening consisting of a 10-minute non-invasive exam and a debriefing with an experienced professional.  Interactive brain health exhibit will also be showcased.

A variety of factors can cause memory and thinking problems. They range from reversible conditions like stress and depression to more serious ailments like stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. A memory screening isn’t a diagnostic tool, but it can indicate whether a person should seek a more comprehensive exam. Individuals whose scores suggest a need for further testing will be referred to their physicians for follow-up care.

Since its opening in 2006, the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute has conducted more than 800 memory screenings at community events. Reservations for memory screenings are required and can be made by calling (602) 239-6850
