Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, behind heart disease and cancer. It is the leading cause of adult disability. About 780,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. It is a type of cardiovascular disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. Stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot or bursts. When this occurs, part of the brain is unable to receive the blood and oxygen it needs, and it begins to die. If you believe you are suffering from symptoms of a stroke, call 9-1-1. Stroke is a medical emergency and every minute counts.
