Banner Health offers ouch-free shots

MESA, Ariz. (July 13, 2009) – Banner Health is taking the needles and pain out of injections for kids with the introduction of the J-Tip injection delivery device at Cardon Children’s Medical Center and Banner Thunderbird Medical Center.

The ouch-free shots are now offered throughout Cardon Children’s, and in the pediatric Emergency department at Banner Thunderbird, located in Glendale, Ariz.. The J-Tip, a pressurized system that administers a lidocaine numbing solution through the skin, prepares the area for shots by numbing it – making shots virtually pain free.

The new device can be used to numb injection sites for a number of procedures including IV insertions, blood draws and even stitches, easing fear of injections and significantly reducing pain. The lidocaine from the J-Tip takes effect in one to three minutes.

“Pediatric patients are always anxious when they come to the hospital,” said Deby Campbell, a pediatric nurse coordinator at Banner Thunderbird who was part of a team that rolled out the use of the new device at the two medical centers. “Anything we can do to reduce their anxiety today leads to a better hospital stay now and also promotes better responses in the future.”

Before the J-Tip, pediatric patients were prepped for injections or small procedures with topical creams and solutions that would take longer to work.

“The J-Tip is but one of the many components of our Pain Management program,” said Teri Reyburn-Orne, pediatric nurse practitioner and manager of the pain management program at Cardon Children’s. “We are committed to minimizing pain in children.''
