Banner Medical Clinic welcomes new family nurse practitioner

Natalie Beck Natalie Beck, FNP

TORRINGTON, Wyo. (July 8, 2009) - Natalie Beck, an Upton native, has returned to Wyoming.

Beck joined Banner Medical Clinic in Torrington in June as a family nurse practitioner, seeing patients four days a week.

Nurse practitioners are licensed independent practitioners, meaning they can practice independently and in collaboration with other health care professionals.  They are registered nurses trained at a master’s degree level or higher to diagnose and treat illness and disease.  Services include ordering, conducting, supervising and interpreting diagnostic and laboratory tests and prescribing medications.  They can assess, diagnose, treat and manage acute episodic illness as well as chronic illnesses.

One of Beck’s main focuses at Banner Medical Clinic will be using her knowledge and degree to manage patients with chronic diagnosis like diabetes.  Banner Medical Clinic is moving to a wellness, prevention and management model, utilizing providers like Beck.

Beck became interested in the medical field early in her life.  Her grandfather was a doctor, and she says she always felt like she wanted to help people.  In middle school, she decided to aim toward the medical field and considered being a physical or occupational therapist, but finally decided that nursing was the best option.

After obtaining her bachelor’s in microbiology and nursing at the University of Wyoming, and working as a certified nursing assistant during her undergraduate work, she decided that she could do more with patient care as a nurse practitioner.  She moved to Greeley, Colo., and obtained her master’s of nursing from the University of Northern Colorado.  While going to school in Greeley, Beck worked as a floor nurse in the transitional care unit at Northern Colorado Medical Center, a hospital operated by Banner Health.  Beck says she really enjoyed working for Banner Health.  She wanted to return to Wyoming, and Banner Medical Clinic was the perfect opportunity.

Beck says she encourages others thinking about the medical field to consider a career in nursing.  “Through nursing, you have tons of opportunities, both as an undergrad or graduate student.”  She says, “You can practice at a clinic, hospital, teach…, there are just lots of areas you can go into.”

Beck lives in Torrington with her husband, Sonny and daughter, Amelia.
