Young adults benefit from lifesaving skills classes at McKee Medical Center

LOVELAND, Colo.  (July 31, 2009) – Community Wellness at McKee Medical Center has created classes specifically aimed to teach young adults important lifesaving skills.

The three different classes offered this month address cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the use of automated external defibrillators, first aid and baby-sitting skills.

“Experts have debated whether young adults can perform CPR well because of the young person’s strength or size,” said Sara Marchi, McKee wellness specialist. “I believe that in a fight or flight response, anyone can save a life.”

Heartsaver CPR with AED for Young Adults ages 11-17 is a two-year certification through the American Heart Association. This class covers cardiopulmonary resuscitation with use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and choking aid for adults, children and infants. The class is at McKee Medical Center from 8 a.m. to noon July 27. The cost is $40.

Heartsaver First Aid for Young Adults ages 11-17 emphasizes identifying and managing life threatening medical emergencies until emergency medial service providers arrive. The class is at McKee from 8 a.m. to noon July 30. The cost is $35

Safe Sitter for Young Adults ages 11-13 shows how to handle emergencies and prevent injuries and behavior problems when caring for children. This class will teach young adults what they need to know to make baby sitting a business and keep themselves and the children in their care safe. The class is at McKee from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 14. The cost is $40.
