New book offers medical advice on reducing Alzheimer’s risk

SUN CITY, Ariz. (Feb. 26, 2008) – Americans can decrease their chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease, according to neurologist Dr. Marwan Sabbagh, a leading expert in Alzheimer’s research and author of The Alzheimer’s Answer: Reduce Your Risk and Keep Your Brain Healthy (Wiley, February 2008, ISBN: 978-0-470-04494-0, $24.95 / Cloth).

The Alzheimer’s Answer is a comprehensive tool for the entire family – guiding readers through facts of the disease, and giving real tips for prevention as well as supportive information on diagnosis and treatment, including where to turn if you or a loved one has Alzheimer’s. Dr. Sabbagh takes a close look at current available therapies, discussing their advantages and downsides, as well as promising new developments and forthcoming treatments.

“Alzheimer’s is a brain disease. It is not normal aging. What begins as benign forgetfulness ends by ultimately ravaging the entire mind,” Dr. Sabbagh says. “By the time an individual begins to show symptoms of Alzheimer’s, the disease has possibly progressed too far to change the outcome. The time to take preventive steps is now.”

The book also includes chapters to:

  • Identify modifiable risk factors
  • “Eat your way out of Alzheimer’s” with a brain-healthy diet
  • Exercise your mind and body

Incorporate essential vitamins and supplements to control and prevent Alzheimer’s.

Hugh Downs, legendary journalist and distinguished advocate of the aging population, says The Alzheimer’s Answer “points to a better public attitude toward Alzheimer’s; and a reasonable hope for transformation of the disease from a dreadful one-way street to a manageable as well as treatable chronic disorder that can allow continuing quality of life.”

Dr. Sabbagh emphasizes that Americans have the power to impact the rate at which this disease progresses, warding off the looming healthcare crisis facing our country – the potential tripling of the Alzheimer’s population over the next two generations to nearly 16 million Americans.

Drawing upon the most up-to-date information available on the disease as well as experiences from his clinical practice, Dr. Sabbagh translates the current ideas driving Alzheimer’s treatment into practical information readers can use to determine their risk and develop a prevention strategy.

Dr. Sabbagh’s inspiration for writing The Alzheimer’s Answer stems professionally from his years in private practice as a geriatric neurologist and director of Sun Health Research Institute’s Cleo Roberts Center for Clinical Research, where he is a leading investigator for several prominent national Alzheimer’s prevention and treatment trials, including Alzheimer vaccine studies. But his passion for guiding patients and their loved ones through the maze of this devastating disease hails from a place much closer to home. Dr. Sabbagh and his wife, also a physician, assumed the role of caregiver for her mother, experiencing first-hand the toll the disease takes on patients and their families.

“Alzheimer’s is the embodiment of all that is sad and destructive with aging. My goal with this book is to translate some of the complex scientific ideas driving Alzheimer’s treatment and research today into practical information people can use to assess their risk and develop a prevention strategy,” Dr. Sabbagh says.

For 21 years, Sun Health Research Institute has been a leader nationally and internationally in the effort to find answers to disorders of aging including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis and prostate cancer. The institute, together with its Arizona Alzheimer’s Consortium partners, has been designated by the National Institutes of Health as one of just 31 Alzheimer’s Disease Centers in the nation. The institute’s Cleo Roberts Center for Clinical Research takes laboratory discoveries to clinical trials that foster hope for new treatments. Sun Health Research Institute is affiliated with the Banner Health non-profit community healthcare network.
