Arizona Parkinson Disease Consortium is chosen as site for $40-million five year grant
Sun City, AZ (Sept 28, 2010) — Banner Sun Health Research Institute in collaboration with Mayo Clinic Arizona announced that it is one of 18 official study sites for the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI), a landmark observational clinical study sponsored by The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which will use a combination of advanced imaging, biologics sampling and behavioral assessments to identify biomarkers of Parkinson’s disease progression. Enrollment of patients at Banner Sun Health Research Institute is expected to begin in August 2010 and will continue for approximately two years.

New techniques to diagnose Parkinson’s will be discussed at upcoming “Power Over Parkinson’s” event, Oct. 23

Banner offers Peripheral Artery Disease screenings
MESA, Ariz. (Sept. 8, 2010) -- Banner Heart Hospital and Banner Desert Medical Center will offer screenings on Sept. 14 and Sept. 16 for Peripheral Arterial Disease, or P. A. D., a common yet serious disease caused by narrowing of the peripheral arteries in the legs or pelvis. The disease is estimated to affect more than 8 million Americans, according to the American Heart Association.

North Colorado Medical Center announces schedule of flu shot clinics
GREELEY, Colo. (Sept. 6, 2010) – On Sept. 22, the Wellness Services team at North Colorado Medical Center will offer the first of several community flu shot clinics in Greeley and surrounding communities. The vaccination offered is to help prevent the seasonal flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting the flu shot as soon as it is available to provide protection if the flu season comes early. This year’s vaccine contains the H1N1 strain that was prevalent in the 2009-2010 season.

New brain imaging study at Banner Boswell aids doctors in stroke treatment
SUN CITY, Ariz. (Aug. 30, 2010) – Physicians at Banner Boswell Medical Center have a new tool to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. Brain perfusion imaging provides doctors with a detailed study of the brain’s blood flow to help them identify patients that could benefit from a clot-busting drug called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA).

Community hospital helping feed the hungry
PHOENIX (Aug. 6, 2010) – Hearing reports that families in their community were going without food did not sit well with employees at Banner Estrella Medical Center. To help satisfy the growing demand, Banner Estrella will hold its first food drive beginning Monday, Aug. 9, to benefit the Agua Fria Food Bank in Avondale. The food drive runs through Aug. 31. Employees of the hospital are hoping the community will join them in the effort to feed low-income families in the West Valley.

ASU Professor Receives Grant to Study Telehealth in Conjunction with Banner Home Care

Feb. 8, 2010) — The National Institute of Health’s National Institute of Nursing Research has awarded veteran nurse and Arizona State University Assistant Professor, Dr. Kimberly Shea, a $385,000 research grant to study “telemonitoring” patients in conjunction with Arizona-based Banner Home Care. Dr. Shea will work with Banner to measure how the feedback patients receive from nurses during daily telemonitoring sessions affects patients' self-care.
