West Valley Alzheimer’s Walk Slated for Saturday
SUN CITY, Ariz. (Oct.18, 2010) — The Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk® is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care is scheduled for Saturday Oct. 23 at 8:30 a.m. at Beardsley Recreation Center in Sun City West.
The annual event inspires people of all ages to become champions in the fight against Alzheimer's.
The walk gives people an opportunity to take action and fight Alzheimer's - a growing epidemic and the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. It is estimated that someone in America develops Alzheimer's disease every 70 seconds. By mid-century someone will develop Alzheimer’s disease every 33 seconds.
There has never been a greater need to join in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in Memory Walk.
“It is important to understand the difference between signs of Alzheimer's and typical age-related changes, such as losing things from time to time versus misplacing things and being unable to retrace steps to find them,” says Marwan Sabbagh MD, director of clinical research at Banner Sun Health Research Institute. “Knowing your risk factors and supporting family and friends are precisely the reasons everyone should attend the walk.”
The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk is an empowering event that gives participants an opportunity to be champions by taking action. In addition to the one or three-mile Walk route, participants will enjoy live music, entertainment, and the company of others who are walking in memory or in honor of those with Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer’s experts such as Dr. Marwan Sabbagh will be on-hand for the walk and information about the disease will be available from the Alzheimer’s Association. There is no fee to participate, but entrants are encouraged to raise funds for the organization through pledge donations.
