Art exhibit honoring cancer journey goes on display at NCMC
GREELEY, Colo. (Aug. 18, 2010) — Art can be a powerful therapy tool for patients who want to express their emotions when faced with cancer.
Some of that power will be displayed when North Colorado Medical Center hosts the Lilly Oncology On Canvas art exhibition Aug. 23-31 at NCMC and the NCMC Cancer Institute.
The Lilly Oncology On Canvas art exhibition honors the journeys traveled by millions of people affected by cancer worldwide. Twenty-five pieces from the collection will be shown this month in Greeley.
In addition, the Spirit of Women and NCMC Cancer Institute have planned a discussion on prostate health for Sept. 16. The event features a panel discussion with urologist Dr. Curtis Crylen, medical oncologist Dr. Sue Tobin and radiation oncologist Dr. Elizabeth Ceilley.
Appetizers and a meet and greet will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the panel discussion from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will be at Ehrlich VW/Nissan on 35th Avenue in Greeley. A classical guitarist group also will perform while guests view another representation of artwork from Oncology On Canvas representing survivorship in cancer.
Lilly Oncology On Canvas was created in 2004 by Eli Lilly and Company to honor the journeys people face when confronted with a cancer diagnosis. The biennial competition invites people diagnosed with any type of cancer, their families and friends, cancer advocates, health care providers as well as artists and art students to express, through art and in narrative, their own cancer journeys.
The 2008 Oncology On Canvas competition, which was open to all U.S. and Puerto Rico residents, received nearly 600 entries.
In total, the 2008 Oncology On Canvas competition awarded 26 prizes to 20 cancer charities selected by the winners. The 2008 art is currently touring cancer centers, hospitals, patient advocacy group meetings and other venues nationwide.
