Banner Boswell neurologist offers ‘Straight Talk about Stroke’ July 20

SUN CITY, Ariz. (July 7, 2010) – Banner Boswell Medical Center invites the community to join neurologist Darry Johnson, MD, for “Straight Talk about Stroke,” a free presentation from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 20 in Sun City. Learn the signs and symptoms of stroke, the risk factors that may hold the key to preventing stroke, and why rapid care for stroke patients is critical to survival.

Dr. Johnson is the medical director of Banner Boswell’s stroke program, which recently earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers. Banner Boswell is the first nationally certified stroke center in the West Valley, and just the ninth in Arizona. The Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center Certification signifies that the services a hospital provides have the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes. It is the best signal to the community that the quality care a hospital provides is effectively managed to meet the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients.

Each year, about 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation’s third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every 4 minutes. Getting to the hospital immediately after a stroke’s onset provides the best chances for stroke recovery.

The presentation will be held in Memorial Hall on the first floor of Banner Boswell’s Support Services Bldg., 13180 N. 103rd Drive, in Sun City. To register, call (602) 230-CARE (2273) or visit www.bannerhealth.com. Light refreshments will be served.
