Banner Health physician discusses intimacy and aging May 4 in Sun City

SUN CITY, Ariz. (April 7, 2010) – A recent study published in the British Medical Journal reports the average person’s sex life ends by age 70. But, does it have to? And how does intimacy fit into the equation? Banner Boswell Medical Center invites the community to “Maintaining Intimacy as We Age,” a free seminar from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4 in the hospital’s Memorial Hall, 13180 N. 103rd Dr. in Sun City. Light refreshments will be served. Call (602) 230-CARE (2273) to reserve your seat or visit www.bannerhealth.com.

Walter Nieri, MD, director of the Center for Healthy Aging at Banner Sun Health Research Institute, will discuss the age-related changes in sexual function in the older adult, the organic and psychological aspects of intimacy and sexuality associated with aging, and the management strategies that foster intimacy and healthy sexual relationships in the older adult. The seminar also will dispel myths about older adults and sexuality, as well as give practical tips on creating and maintaining intimacy at any age.

“No matter what the age or what the diseases may be, we retain the need for love, companionship, and to be touched,” emphasized Dr. Nieri. “Intimacy is a form of socialization. Having an intimate relationship with someone you can share your innermost thoughts with can decrease the chance of isolation and depression, which is an increased risk factor for mortality.”
