Surgeon to discuss minimally-invasive GERD treatment

LOVELAND, Colo.  (Nov. 3, 2010) – A Loveland general surgeon will talk about a new incision-free procedure for treatment of GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease during a presentation Nov. 16 at McKee Medical Center.

Karin Schmidová, MD, is a general surgeon who practices at McKee Medical Center and Skyline Center for Health. The event is free and scheduled for 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m. at the McKee Conference and Wellness Center, 2000 Boise Ave. Light refreshments will be served. Please register by Nov. 13 by calling (970) 593-6074.

More than 30 million people in the United States suffer from GERD – a condition in which food or liquid in the stomach leaks backward into the esophagus causing irritation and symptoms that include heartburn. GERD often is treated with lifelong drug therapy.

Dr. Schmidová will discuss a surgical alternative to treat GERD: a transoral incisionless fundoplication. This procedure is done with the use of a piece of equipment called EsophyX, which allows the surgeon to avoid incisions and complete surgical treatment by reaching the area through the mouth.

Dr. Schmidová received her undergraduate degree from Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, and her medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine. She completed surgical training residency at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa. She is board certified in general surgery.
