Learn how to prevent falls, injury at free seminar in Sun City March 10

SUN CITY, Ariz. (Feb. 18, 2010) – Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among older adults, as well as the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma. The public is invited to “Taking Steps to Prevent Falls,” a free community lecture from 2 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10 at Fairway Recreation Center, Arizona Room, 10600 W. Peoria Ave. in Sun City. Registration is encouraged by calling (602) 230-2273. Light refreshments will be served.

Hosted by Banner Boswell Medical Center, the lecture will be presented by Lori Ramage, physical therapist, Joint Club coordinator, and Heather Moore, RN, Orthopedics senior manager. Attendees will learn how to reduce the risk for falls and simple steps they can take to make their homes safer.

“More than 50 percent of falls occur at home, and if you’re over 65, your chances of experiencing a fall are one in three,” said Ramage. “A person’s medication, hearing and even lighting in the home can affect balance and space perception, which influences the risk for falling. There are simple steps you can take to reduce your fall risk, which ultimately benefit your health and well-being.”

The lecture is part of a health education series planned by Banner Boswell in partnership with the Sun City 50th Anniversary Committee to celebrate Sun City’s 50th Anniversary in 2010. For more information about other anniversary events, visit www.suncityaz.org.
