Banner Boswell lecture on Dec. 13 answers back pain questions
SUN CITY, Ariz. (Nov. 15, 2011) – Back pain is one of the most common health complaints, affecting 80 percent of people at some point in their lives. That's why Banner Boswell Medical Center is hosting "Why Does My Back Hurt?" a free seminar from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13 in Memorial Hall on the first floor of Banner Boswell’s Support Services Building, 13180 N. 103rd Drive in Sun City.
Neurosurgeon Nevra S. King, MD, will be discussing the causes of back pain and treatment options, which range from physical therapy and medication management to surgery, depending on the severity and duration of the pain.
Common conditions that cause back pain include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease and vertebral fractures.
"Certain factors cause degenerative disease, including jobs where individuals are actively on their feet on a daily basis, such as health care and construction workers and military personnel," said Dr. King. "Experiencing a trauma, such as an injury, can aggravate symptoms or even trigger symptoms of a degenerative condition that may have been silent up to that point."
Dr. King emphasized that because pain is subjective, it can be hard to treat. "Every individual has a different response to pain. It's important for patients to be educated about the various options to treat their pain to allow for a more informed discussion with their physician."
Reservations for the event can be made online at www.BannerHealth.com/230CARE or during normal business hours by phone at (602) 230-2273. Refreshments will be served.
