Blood Drive Scheduled for Jan.25

BRUSH, Colo. (Jan. 6, 2011) – East Morgan County Hospital will be holding a blood drive on Jan. 25 at the hospital. 

“Donating blood gives back to our community and helps our patients when they need a transfusion,” said John Liston, laboratory supervisor at EMCH.  “On average a transfusion for a patient will require two units.”

The North Colorado Medical Center Mobile Blood Bank will be on site in the south parking lot, Wednesday, Jan. 25 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. to draw blood. To schedule an appointment call 842-6257, appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcomed.

Each donation of blood can be turned into several different products. From whole-blood donations, we can process the unit to make at least three different blood products, providing potentially life-saving help to three different patients.

Your blood will be taken and spun at high speeds in a large device called a centrifuge. When this happens, blood separates into three main parts: Red cells, plasma, and platelets. Each of these can potentially be harvested for use for individual patients.
The units donated will go into inventory and are used for our patients needing transfusions, said Liston.  This opportunity is open to the public, new donors are always welcomed.
