McKee Breast Center earns Center of Excellence designation

LOVELAND, Colo. (Oct. 12, 2011) – The McKee Breast Center at McKee Medical Center has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the American College of Radiology recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, breast ultrasound including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, and stereotactic biopsy which uses digital mammographic imaging and a local anesthetic to obtain tissue samples.

Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging process by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that McKee Breast Center has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.

The American College of Radiology is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

In addition to receiving the accreditation, the breast center staff is pleased to announce that Breast Health Specialist Ann Dorwart, FNP, has completed breast health navigator training through EduCare. In this role, Dorwart will coordinate the clinical, educational and support needs of breast cancer patients and their families.

EduCare is a training agency for breast health navigators. It was founded by Judy C. Kneece, a registered nurse and certified oncology nurse who specializes in breast cancer.

In the three-day training in August, Dorwart learned how to better educate patients about breast health issues and how to implement a complete program of education and support of women diagnosed with breast cancer. Part of her training involved indentifying barriers to patient care, monitoring the patient for psychological distress and developing survivorship programs.

In conjunction with McKee Medical Center, the breast center offers a comprehensive program for diagnosing and treating breast disease. The center opened in 2006 at Seven Lakes Medical Plaza, 1900 Boise Ave., Suite 110 in Loveland. The phone number is (970) 203-6518. To make an appointment, please call (970) 593-6191.
