Windsor’s Banner physicians promote reading with health

GREELEY, Colo. (Dec. 7, 2011) — Children who see Dr. Jonathan Kary or Dr. Trina Kessinger at the Medical Arts Centre of Windsor are receiving a good book along with a good checkup from the clinic.

Banner Health’s Medical Arts Centre of Windsor is participating in Reach Out and Read, a nationwide program that partners with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together.

“It is the highlight of my day when I see the smiles on the children’s faces when they receive their very own book,” said Dr. Kessinger.

Doctors, nurse practitioners and other medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read’s evidence-based model into regular pediatric checkups. They advise parents about the importance of reading aloud to their children and present the children with age-appropriate books.

The program begins at the child’s 6-month checkup and continues through age 5. The hope is that families who participate in Reach Out and Read will read together more often and that the children will enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills. Through April 2011, the program was located in 4,688 hospitals and health centers across the country and served 3.9 million children and families each year.

The program is supported by public and private funding and is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.

Medical Arts Centre of Windsor is located at 1300 Main St. in Windsor. The phone number is (970) 686-5646.
