Women invited to 'Get a Clue' about thyroid disease at unique event

GREELEY, Colo. (May 19, 2011) — North Colorado Medical Center and Spirit of Women invite local women to “Get into the Game of Health” at a special event at Eaton Grove Nursery on Saturday, June 11, at 9:30 a.m.

A panel of experts from the NCMC Endocrinology Clinic will answer questions and delve into the mystery of the endocrine system – specifically taking aim at the thyroid.

According to statistics by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and other medical organizations, thyroid disease is a fact of life for as many as 27 million Americans – and more than half of those people remain undiagnosed.

“We hope to provide an opportunity for women to learn more about this disease, its causes, diagnosis and treatments,” said Kris Howard, manager of the Spirit of Women program at NCMC. “Approximately 80 percent of thyroid disease is experienced by females; women are five times more likely to develop hypothyroidism than are men, so this is a perfect opportunity to come and learn in a beautiful setting,” Howard explained.

The 2011 Spirit of Women events encourage women to “Get in the Game,” and the game of CLUE is featured at this event. In addition to learning about the thyroid mystery, women will have the opportunity to hear from Ken Olsen, owner of Eaton Grove Nursery, about clues to more colorful landscapes and solving common garden mysteries.

“Get a CLUE: the Mystery of the Thyroid”  will take place Saturday, June 11 from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Eaton Grove Nursery, 35901 Weld County Road 31 in Eaton. The event is free for Spirit of Women members and $10 for all others. Make a reservation by calling the Spirit line: (970) 392-2222.
