Banner Estrella Announces $151 Million Expansion

PHOENIX (June 7, 2012) — Banner Estrella Medical Center is proud to announce the addition of a new 144-bed patient tower to its hospital campus, located at the 101 and Thomas Road in Phoenix.

The Tower Two Construction Project will include:

  • Providing enough additional capacity to meet demand for patient care services through 2018
  • Including numerous infrastructure improvements that pave the way for additional future expansions, including
    • two shelled patient bed floors, a new cardiac catheterization lab, three new operating rooms and additional medical imaging capabilities
  • Increasing Emergency department capacity
  • Remodeling existing obstetrical suites and providing additional neonatal intensive care unit capacity
  • Adding an additional surgical suite
  • Providing more visitor and staff parking

Construction on this multi-phase project is anticipated to begin in August and anticipated to be completed in July 2015.

This project is important to the area economy because of the construction jobs it will create, and, more importantly, the long-term employment increase from the 200 jobs that are projected to support patient care once the tower opens.

“For the past seven years, Banner Estrella has been the West Valley’s preferred health care provider and we are pleased to be able to grow in support of the needs of the communities we serve,” said Deb Krmpotic, chief executive officer for Banner Estrella Medical Center.

“This is especially important for our Women and Infants Services department and our Emergency department, both of which are regularly at capacity due to our reputation for providing excellence in patient care.”

As Banner continues to significantly expand its outpatient capabilities through the Banner Health Network and construction of centers and clinics where Banner Medical Group physicians will provide care in outpatient settings, there also is significant demand to increase Banner Estrella’s capacity, as well.

Banner Health currently has two ambulatory facilities projects under construction in southwestern Maricopa County— Banner Verrado and Estrella Mountain.

This Tower Two Construction project will support patients from both
ambulatory facilities, as well as new patients from Avondale, Buckeye, Glendale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Peoria, Surprise, Tolleson and West Phoenix.
