Banner Thunderbird certified as advanced pediatric emergency center
GLENDALE, Ariz. (April 11, 2012) –The Northwest Valley's only Children’s Center has been certified as a provider of advanced care for kids with emergencies.
Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale has received Prepared Advanced Care certification as part of a new program to improve outcomes for ill and injured children visiting emergency rooms in Arizona.
In addition to Banner Thunderbird, eight other facilities, including Cardon Children’s Medical Center in the East Valley, are among the first to receive the certification following site visits conducted between December 2011 and March 2012. The certification includes three levels -- Prepared, Prepared Plus Care and Prepared Advanced Care.
Cardon Children’s and Banner Thunderbird are certified at the Prepared Advanced Care level.
Created through a public-private partnership between the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AzAAP) and the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS), Pediatric-Prepared Emergency Care (PPEC) is a voluntary certification program of pediatric standards for emergency departments. Certified hospitals meet specific criteria and are prepared to provide emergency care resources and capabilities for pediatric patients.
"We are very excited to have achieved this advanced status as well as being recognized as a pediatric emergency department that offers such a high level of service," said William Schneider, MD, medical director of Banner Thunderbird's Pediatric Emergency department. "We are committed to giving the highest quality of pediatric emergency services and this certification demonstrates our abilities to provide these services to our community.".
"The advanced care level signifies to the community that we are the best of the best for pediatric patients in our ED and can take care of all levels of peds patients," said Kim Marshall, pediatric nurse manager in the ED. "We can provide this care because we have the required equipment, additional training for our staff and providers and the facility to treat the in as well."
Arizona is among only five states to implement such a specialized pediatric emergency care system, according to AzAAP.
