G. Anton Decker, M.B.B.Ch., named Chief Medical Officer for Banner Medical Group

PHOENIX (April 19, 2012) – G. Anton Decker, M.B.B.Ch., has accepted the position of chief medical officer for Banner Medical Group. Dr. Decker will join the Banner Medical Group leadership team on Tuesday, May 1, 2012. His office will be located at the Banner Corporate Center in Phoenix.

A respected gastroenterologist, Dr. Decker is an expert in patient care, patient safety, and biomedical informatics. He served in various leadership roles including associate chair for Quality and Safety with the Department of Internal Medicine, a physician leader for Mayo Clinic’s Electronic Medical Record Convergence, and chair of the Mayo Clinic Enterprise Diagnosis and Problem List Task Force.

A native of South Africa, Dr. Decker received his medical degree from University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He completed his residency training at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale and Rochester, and earned a Gastroenterology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester. Dr. Decker is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in the United Kingdom. He has a Masters degree in Health Administration and is a Certified Physician Executive through the American College of Physician Executives. He is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives where he serves on the Arizona Regent’s Advisory Council.

Dr. Decker joins Banner after a 10-year career at the Mayo Clinic, first in Rochester, Minn., before moving to Scottsdale, Ariz., in 2004. At Mayo Clinic, he served as director of the Gastroenterology Hospital Practice, program director for the Gastroenterology Fellowship, and medical director of the Pancreas Clinic. He has published 43 peer-reviewed manuscripts and delivered more than 50 local, national and international medical lectures.
