Multiple-birth specialist returns to the Valley… quints follow!
MESA, Ariz. (Sept. 6, 2012) – North Carolina resident Carmen Milam Matthews, 33, has come to the Valley to seek the care of nationally renowned perinatologist, John Elliott, MD, who has returned to the area to join Southwest Contemporary Women’s Care (SCWC) in Mesa and Ahwatukee, Ariz.
Matthews, under the care of Elliott, today gave birth to quintuplets at Banner Desert Medical Center, where SCWC physicians have long delivered babies.
Matthews is in good condition at Banner Desert and her five babies are receiving care in the neonatal intensive care unit at Cardon Children’s Medical Center.
The Matthews babies – two girls and three boys – were born between 7:25 and 7:27 a.m., on Thursday, September 6, following a 34-week pregnancy.

- Layton Cooper, boy, 4 lbs., 13 oz.
- Carleigh Sue, girl, 3 lbs., 10 oz.
- Rucker Mitchell, boy, 2 lbs., 2 oz.
- Eason John, boy, 3 lbs., 12 oz.
Matthews and her husband, Mike, hail from Wilmington, N.C. They were in Laguna Hills, Calif. where Elliott has been located since 2010. However, when Elliott decided to return to the Valley they followed him here to continue receiving care under his guidance.
