North Colorado Medical Center program aids victims of sexual assault
GREELEY, Colo. (Sept. 13, 2012) – Nurses from North Colorado Medical Center’s Emergency Department now offer around-the-clock specialty care for sexual assault victims.
The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Team, also referred to as the SANE Team, is a group of eight experienced registered nurses who have received specialized training and provide compassionate care to adult, adolescent and pediatric patients impacted by sexual assault and abuse. They provide exams and collect evidence. The nurses also can serve as subpoenaed witnesses to give testimony regarding the care and evidence found in the exams.
The SANE Team offers 24/7 coverage for any patient who has been sexually assaulted. They also provide prophylactic medications for sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy prevention.
The team has worked closely with victim advocacy groups throughout Weld County to provide follow up counseling, victim assistance programs and support with navigating through the legal process and trauma. The nurses work collaboratively with police, prosecutors, child protective services and others to provide the best and most appropriate care.
Patients can be referred to the Main Emergency Department at 1801 16th St. for a SANE exam. The patient will be taken to a room specifically designated for these exams.
