US News Ranks Banner Good Samaritan As the #1 Hospital in Arizona and the Phoenix Metropolitan Area
PHOENIX (July 17, 2012) — U.S.News & World Report has recognized nonprofit Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center as the number one hospital in Arizona, as well as the Phoenix Metropolitan area. The medical center was also ranked as one of “America’s Best Hospitals” in four specialty areas. This marks the 13th year that the hospital has been nationally ranked by U.S.News & World Report.
Banner Good Samaritan was recognized for four programs – Cardiology & Heart Surgery (#36), Diabetes & Endocrinology (#36), Geriatrics (#31) and Nephrology (#47). BGSMC was also recognized as high performing in Cancer, Ear, Nose & Throat, Gastroenterology, Gynecology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology.
Best Hospitals 2012-13 included rankings of 720 medical centers nationwide in 16 specialties. “The hospital rankings are like a GPS-type aid to help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges,” said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow, “All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care. They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”
“We are honored that U.S. News has recognized Banner Good Samaritan as the best hospital in Arizona, as well as one of America’s Best Hospitals,” said Larry Volkmar, CEO, Banner Good Samaritan. “Our hospital has developed a strong reputation locally for the excellent patient care that we provide. These ranking show us that our commitment to patient care is being recognized nationally by a much larger audience. This is an exciting day for our hospital, employees, physicians and the community we serve.”
Hard numbers stand behind the rankings in most specialties—death rates, patient safety, procedure volume, and other objective data. Also factored into the rankings were responses to a national survey in which physicians were asked to name hospitals they consider best in their specialty for the toughest cases.
The rankings, annually published by U.S. News for the past 23 years, will also be featured in the U.S. News Best Hospitals guidebook, which will go on sale in August. The entire list is available online at The http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals.
