Arizona artist to create, donate painting for raffle
MESA, Ariz. (March 15, 2013) – An Arizona Centennial artist has volunteered to create and donate an original painting to be raffled at the Garden of Hope Spring Luncheon in April to benefit the Banner Desert Cancer Center. Patients, visitors and employees will be able to watch Artist in Residence Frank Ybarra as he completes the painting at Banner Desert Medical Center on March 20.
Ybarra, an artist mentor for the annual Day of Art program at the hospital, will start the original work at home and finish as spectators look on. He will work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., March 20 in the Banner Desert cafeteria, 1400 S. Dobson Road in Mesa. The cafeteria chef has planned an “artist’s menu” for guests to enjoy while they watch Ybarra work.
"I am a colon cancer survivor and an artist,” Ybarra said. “I have participated in the Banner Desert Cancer Center's Day of Art over the past few years. I've enjoyed working with the cancer patients, sharing our stories and expressing our experiences through art.
“I was asked to create a special piece for the Cancer Center to raffle off and help raise funds. It's an honor for me to spend the day creating a piece so that everyone can see the process of how I create a painting, as well as share my stories as a cancer patient and survivor."
Ybarra, who grew up in east Phoenix, is known for his colorful, neo-Cubist drawings of landmarks of the Southwest, as well as familiar family scenes representing his Mexican-American heritage. To view examples of his art and learn more about him, visit www.ybarraart.com.
Raffle tickets for the painting as well as notecards bearing another Ybarra painting will be on sale March 20 through April 11, the date of the Garden of Hope Spring Luncheon.
The painting will be raffled during the Spring Luncheon, which will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Stonebridge Manor, 4000 E. Palm St., Mesa. Proceeds from the event, raffle, notecard sales and silent auction will benefit Banner Desert Cancer Center, providing education and support services for those with cancer. Tickets for this year’s luncheon are $60 per person.
