BSHRI opens American Parkinson’s Disease Association office

SUN CITY, Ariz. (Jan. 11, 2013) – Parkinson’s Disease patients and their families will have a new resource in the community to help them cope with their disease.

Banner Sun Health Research Institute announced this week the opening of its new American Parkinson’s Disease Association (APDA) office in Sun City. The office opened Jan. 7.

Tom Viviano is the outreach coordinator for the program. The organization’s goal is to promote education for Parkinson’s Disease patients and their caregivers, as well as raising awareness of the disease in the community.

“The addition of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association Information & Referral Center to the clinical and research components of the current BSHRI Parkinson’s programs will give Arizonans with Parkinson’s disease, and their families, a full range of services to meet their needs," Viviano said.

Viviano has served as coordinator of the North Arizona APDA Center for the past seven years, so he is familiar with the team at BSHRI, including head of Banner Sun Health Research Institute’s Thomas H. Christopher Center for Parkinson’s Research, Dr. Holly Shill.

“We have worked with Tom on educational programs and other initiatives and we are very excited he will now be a part of the BSHRI Parkinson’s Disease team,” Shill said.

This is not the APDA’s first foray into the West Valley. Last fall, the organization partnered with Banner to host the Power Over Parkinson’s conference in Peoria.
