Banner Boswell Medical Center to host free breast health lecture and community discussion

SUN CITY, Ariz. (Sept. 23, 2013) – Banner Boswell Medical Center is kicking off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month from 8:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 with a free community education event called “Breast Health Universi-TEA.” Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is also one of the leading causes of cancer death, but early detection is the best way to increase a woman’s chance of survival.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. with tea and other refreshments and the opportunity to visit a variety of educational booths promoting breast health. The nonprofit hospital will also have a representative on-site from Banner Lakes Imaging Center to schedule women for their annual screening mammography. At 9 a.m., attendees are invited to hear from four medical experts on the following topics:

  • Breast Cancer basics - Jean Schulman, MD, Medical Oncologist
    • Dr. Schulman will discuss the basics of breast health, including breast cancer prevention, types of breast cancers and treatment options.
  • Diagnostic Strategies and 3D Mammography – Steven Charney, MD, Interventional Radiologist
    • Dr. Charney’s presentation will focus on educating participants about diagnostic and interventional imaging, including the new low dose 3D Mammography unit.
  • Surgical Treatment – Brenda Moorthy, DO, Breast Surgeon
    • What do you need to know about breast cancer, and what questions should you ask your breast surgeon? Dr. Moorthy’s presentation will answer these questions and discuss goals for treating early breast cancer.
  • Radiology and Oncology Options – James Marsh, MD, Radiation Oncologist
    • Dr. Marsh will describe what radiation therapy is and discuss the latest advances in breast cancer treatment.

The physician experts will participate in a question and answer panel discussion following the presentations; audience participation is encouraged.

“Breast Health Universi-TEA” will be held in Banner Boswell’s Memorial Hall on the first floor of the Support Services Building, 13180 N. 103rd Dr., Sun City. Attendees planning on scheduling for their low dose 3D mammogram are asked to bring a physician order to the event.

Reservations are required and seating is limited. To RSVP, please call (602) 230-2273 (CARE) or visit
