Banner Thunderbird health event for teens
“Keepin’ it Real” event for teens and parents provides solutions and support
GLENDALE, Ariz. (March 20, 2013) – Teenagers can have a difficult time coping with stress caused by all aspects of their life including school, relationships and family. Parents can have a difficult time too watching stresses build up for their teens who are no longer children, but not yet young adults.
Just before proms and graduation parties, the experts at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center invite Teens and their parents to “Keepin’ it Real”- a free event with answers for important health topics.
Separate sessions for teens and parents include expert speakers on the topics of:
- Sexual Health - STDs are on the rise.Television shows and movies sometimes portray a carefree attitude about sex and rarely show the effects or consequences of it. Yet, few things impact the life of a teen more than the consequences of sexual behavior. Also discussed will be body acceptance.
- Depression - There are different forms of depression and it is often difficult to detect. Adults sometimes fail to recognize and understand that the situations teens face are very different from what they face and many factors can lead to depression. Also discussed will be suicide and bullying.
- Drugs and Alcohol - What are raves? What can parents do to help their child avoid them? Teens get pressured to drink and do drugs all the time and whether or not a teen decides to engage in this behavior impacts their image. It can cause lasting effects on teens including dependency, legal problems, health issues, and regretful decisions.
- Internet Safety - The internet bombards us with some great and accurate information but also some half-truths and some lies. This session will be insightful for parents and teens alike.
