‘Carnevale di Venezia’ a spectacular show for 4th annual Stars of the Season
Fundraising soirée raises more than $400,000 for NICU at Cardon Children’s Medical Center
PHOENIX, Ariz. (Nov. 1, 2013) – Maintaining its status as a successful star-studded affair, the fourth annual Stars of the Season fundraising soirée for Banner Children’s at Cardon Children’s Medical Center played to a packed house on Saturday, Oct. 26. More than 600 guests gathered at the Montelucia Resort & Spa in Paradise Valley for an evening of excitement and entertainment that raised more than $400,000 for the hospital’s Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Following a theme of “Carnevale di Venezia,” the opulent event featured colorful décor, festive performers indicative of the Italian Renaissance, silent and live auctions, and an intimate performance by Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington. Valley native and well-known front man of Linkin Park, Bennington recently signed on as the new lead vocalist of Stone Temple Pilots (STP).
One of Banner Health Foundation’s signature fundraising events, Stars of the Season was organized by the Advisory Council of Cardon Children’s Medical Center, a 55-member volunteer council that was founded by Tina Curran and her husband David Curran, MD, chairman of the hospital’s Department of Pediatric Medicine.
“Tina and Dave are a dynamic power couple and they have brought together an amazing group of philanthropically-minded individuals to help support Cardon Children’s Medical Center,” commented Andy Kramer Petersen, president and CEO of Banner Health Foundation. “We are incredibly fortunate to have their support and we look forward to the continued success of Stars of the Season.”
This year’s soirée was chaired by Melissa Felder, Jennifer Johnson, Stephanie Linnenkamp and Kimberly Mazinter. Professional golfer Tom Lehman and his wife, Melissa, served as honorary chairs. Ted Stryker, drive-time DJ on The World Famous KROQ in Los Angeles, was emcee.
Included among the evening’s celebrity lineup was Robert DeLeo, STP bassist; Dean DeLeo, STP guitarist; Eric Kretz, STP drummer; Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park; former NFL quarterback and Hall of Fame honoree Steve Young; Seattle Mariners pitcher Joe Saunders; Atlanta Braves outfielder Justin Upton; Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher J.J. Putz; and Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon McCarthy.
Proceeds from the event are earmarked to support the addition of more private patient rooms in the NICU that enable families of some of Banner Health’s smallest and most fragile patients to stay together throughout the care continuum. Ryan and Rachel Turley and their five children, three of whom were cared for in the NICU, were recognized as this year’s “star” honorees and serve as shining examples of why it is so important to keep families together during a baby’s NICU journey.
Casino Arizona/Talking Stick Resort served as major sponsor of the 2013 Stars of the Season. Additional sponsors included media sponsor Clear Channel Entertainment + Media/Clear Channel Outdoor and Linkin Park.
