North Colorado Medical Center achieves national award
Healthgrades names NCMC one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals in 2013
GREELEY, Colo. (Feb. 19, 2013) – North Colorado Medical Center today announced that it has been named one of the nation’s 100 Best hospitals, as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource that helps consumers search, evaluate, compare and connect with physicians and hospitals. By earning this distinction, North Colorado Medical Center is among the top 2 percent of hospitals in the nation.
To determine the nation’s best performing hospitals, Healthgrades based its evaluation on objective measures of clinical quality across nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide. To be recognized with this distinction, hospitals must have had measurably lower risk adjusted mortality and complication rates across a minimum of 19 of the 27 conditions and procedures evaluated. Not only do hospitals need to turn in top performance over the most recent evaluation period to be eligible to be in this distinguished group, superior performance must be demonstrated consistently, year after year, for a minimum of four years. This is the second year that North Colorado Medical Center has achieved this designation by delivering consistently superior clinical performance in Northern Colorado.
While many of our nation’s hospitals are eligible to be on this list, North Colorado Medical Center was the only hospital in Northern Colorado to receive this designation.
“This award is recognition of sustained excellence at North Colorado Medical Center,” said Rick Sutton, NCMC chief executive officer. “In the face of change within the healthcare industry, we continue to achieve excellent patient outcomes and patient satisfaction.”
North Colorado Medical Center is a leader in the area in significantly reducing the number of avoidable deaths. If all hospitals lowered their mortality rates to the level of North Colorado Medical Center and the other 99 distinguished members of this group, 165,636 lives could have potentially been saved nationwide between 2009 and 2011.
“This distinction provides a measure of confidence for consumers. Hospitals earn this distinction by providing better than expected outcomes across a broad spectrum of conditions and procedures over an extended period of time,” said Evan Marks, EVP Informatics and Strategy. “Their exceptional performance reflects their dedicated approach to delivering superior quality of care for patients.”
Two of America’s 100 Best Hospitals are located in Colorado (Banner Health North Colorado Medical Center, Greeley, and Penrose St. Francis Health Services, Colorado Springs).

Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance for nearly every hospital in the nation; no hospital can opt-in or opt-out of being evaluated, and no hospital pays to be evaluated.
