Laura Dreier Breast Center offers state-of-the-art digital mammography

New technology proven to be more accurate when detecting breast cancer

Mammogram
PHOENIX (October 1, 2007) – The Laura Dreier Breast Center at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center recently installed a new digital mammography system, allowing higher quality images for diagnosis of breast cancer. The new Senographe® DS full-field digital mammography system from GE Healthcare is the most modern mammography equipment available to patients today.

There are many benefits of digital mammography including shorter exam times – the average exam can be reduced to 10 to 15 minutes compared to 30 minutes or more with traditional film-based mammograms; a flexible paddle that shapes to the breast optimizing the tissue presented for imaging, which is especially useful in gathering tissue under the arm; and slower compression speed to provide more comfort.

“We are excited to offer digital mammography to our patients,” said Ali Forootan, M.D., breast radiologist and medical director, Laura Dreier Breast Center. “It has been proven that digital mammography is more sensitive than traditional film screen mammography in detecting breast cancer in young patients and patients with dense breast tissue.”

The Center serves thousands of women across the greater Phoenix area each year by providing annual screening mammograms, diagnostic breast exams and bone density studies. Additionally, to meet the breast health needs of underserved women, the Center established the Reaching Out: Laura Dreier Breast Health Program. Through this program, outreach and clinical nurse breast specialists educate women about the latest breast disease prevention, early detection and treatment information.

The Laura Dreier Breast Center promotes good breast health practices and teaches self-exam techniques to be used in conjunction with annual screening mammograms for women age 40 and up.
