Perioperative Program for RNs

This comprehensive program prepares the Registered Nurse for a career in the Perioperative arena. Registered Nurses will learn the basics needed to launch their Perioperative career. Banner Health employees are required to sign an Education Assistance Loan Agreement and a Promissory Note and to commit to working full-time at a Banner Health facility for a period of one year after completion of the program.

Dates

  • First week of February - Winter Program Begins
  • First week of  August - Summer Program Begins

Intended Audience

  • RN hired into a Banner Health Perioperative Unit
  • Banner Health RN not hired into a Perioperative Unit but has interest in learning more about the field
  • Non-Banner Health RN (Applicable fee is $2,500)

Note: Clinical experience is not available for those not hired into a Banner Perioperative Unit.

Program Details
The Perioperative Program content is based on the AORN standards. The program consists of two parts:

Periop Basics – 120 hours
127 CEUs
The first three weeks provide classroom, skills demonstration and clinical experience* covering the basics of the scrub and circulating roles of the Perioperative RN, as well as covering clinical specialties common to the majority of medical facilities.

Optional Specialties – 64 hours classroom
CEUs pending
Pre-requisite: Completion of Periop Basics Course or currently working in the Perioperative area and successful completion of an entry exam. Offers classroom, skills demonstration and clinical experience* covering the basics of advanced specialties.

* Non-Banner employees will need to make arrangements for clinical days in their facility.

Note: This program provides only an introduction to the specialties. The Intern's clinical experience is critical to skills development. Further education and experience will be needed to develop competency in these areas.

At the conclusion of either the Periop Basics or Optional Specialties course, the Periop Intern will return to his or her facility and participate in a clinical rotation in partnership with a preceptor in a perioperative area. The clinical experience, including both scrubbing and circulating time, although facility specific, will typically be a minimum of five months or until sufficient experience has occurred to develop the skills needed to function independently at each facility. Smaller facilities, with a smaller variety of cases, may need less precepted clinical time.

Faculty
This program was designed and is taught by Banner Health Perioperative Educators and Clinical Nurse Specialists with many years of perioperative experience.
