It's about being there for patients who are ready to move on to the next life
Mike, a radiation oncology nurse, has been closely involved in the care of a long-term patient. The terminally ill patient wanted to find a home for his bird before he dies. Knowing that Mike is a bird lover, the patient asked him if he'd be interested, and Mike said, "Well sure."
In the last days of the patient's life, Mike brought the bird to the patient's home for visits and has helped the patient clean up his apartment (The patient lives alone and is too ill to care for the apartment). The patient has told Mike that he doesn't need to bring the bird over anymore, that he has said his "goodbyes". This patient will soon pass away, but at least will have peace knowing that someone will care for his beloved bird.
