Audio: “Thank you, Andrea, for joining us today. And you’ve been such a dedicated Banner employee here for a past number of years. It was during that time here at Banner that you lost your son, Nick.”

Silva Audio: “Yes. My son was diagnosed in 2005 with cancer, and he stayed at Banner Desert Arizona or the children’s hematology/oncology unit. And he was very well-cared for. And then he also spent three weeks over at the City of Hope over at Good Sam. And it was during that time that I was able to stay with him at the hospital and also be at home with him during some of the days that he had to be at home.”
Hill Audio: “And over the years here you’ve been able to accrue a number of hours of paid time off, so you didn’t have to worry about that?”
Silva Audio: “Yes. I had so much PTO I even had to cash out on a yearly basis, because we never went anywhere. But when it came down to Nick’s illness, I had enough that I could get through the days that I needed to be off; but it was nice to know that I had employee friends that were offering to donate PTO if I needed it.”
Hill Audio: “And you were also able to take advantage of telecommuting and flexible work schedules?”
Silva Audio: “Yes. During his time at the hospital, he would be in the hospital for about five days, and then he’d have to be away from people for a few extra days; so I would telecommute work from home for a couple of those days so I could be there to care for him but also be able to work and get some stuff done while I was off.”
Hill Audio: “And overall, what did it mean to have the support of Banner and your co-workers during this time?”
Silva Audio: “It was really great. Being here for the 23 years that I’ve been here now, the employees -- my friends, really came through emotionally, spiritually and financially helping me and my family during this time. They’re like my extended family.”
Hill Audio: “Well, thank you so much for joining us today.”
