For decades, the month of February has been designated as “Heart Month.” For some, this may bring forth thoughts of flowers, chocolates and sentiments to your Valentine, but Heart Month has much broader significance at Banner Health Foundation. This month offers us a valuable opportunity to recognize the outstanding care delivered by the nonprofit Banner Health’s cardiovascular services.
By enlisting support from our community to benefit heart health and wellness programs, the Foundation assists in underwriting technology, expert staffing and other services pertinent to cardiovascular treatment. The Foundation accepts contributions to a variety of facilities and programs, including Banner Heart Hospital, one of the nation’s largest free-standing heart hospitals; the Harry J. Cavanagh Cardiology Center at Banner Good Samaritan; and cardiovascular programs at Banner Desert, Banner Estrella and Banner Thunderbird Medical Centers, respectively. Donations may also be made in recognition of a friend, family member or caregiver through our Gift from the Heart celebration walls located at several facilities. With our Healing Hearts program, patients, employees and others can honor an outstanding Banner Health caregiver who made a difference in their lives by making a donation to one or more of the many programs offered by our organization. Banner Health’s cardiovascular and other services remain vibrant as a result of these programs and the generosity of our community.
I encourage you to share information about how the Foundation positively impacts Banner Health’s cardiovascular services with those around you, including family and friends. And if you know of someone who has received great care at one of our facilities and might be interested in contributing to these services through Banner Health Foundation, please call us at 602.747.GIVE (4483). By working together, we can share Banner Health’s commitment to making our family, friends and loved ones heart-healthy throughout the community!
PEOPLE
Banner Health Foundation welcomes new board members
In 2007, Banner Health Foundation Chairman of the Board Ken Van Winkle, with support from his executive committee, invited several leaders from the community to join the organization’s board of directors. New additions to the board include David Berry of Swift Transportation, Ted Northrop of Atwell-Hicks, and Sharon Harper of the Plaza Companies. Banner Health Foundation is proud to welcome these individuals to our organization, and is grateful for the tremendous contributions made by each of the Foundation’s volunteer board members.
PROGRAMS
Children’s Hospital School Makes the Grade with $150,000 State Farm Gift
The new hospital school at Banner Children’s Hospital at Banner Desert Medical Center was recently given an A+ endorsement from State Farm Mutual Insurance Companies®. At a special ceremony held on the campus of Banner Desert Medical Center, executives from State Farm presented a check for $150,000 to hospital officials, to fund start-up costs and first-year operating expenses for the school, a partnership between the hospital and Mesa Public Schools.
The donation was a culmination of a successful promotion driven by Arizona State Farm agents to the pediatric inpatient education program. Championed by State Farm agent Kevin Smith, whose daughter Shannon is a former patient at Banner Children’s, the promotion commenced in fall 2007 to generate much-needed financial support for the hospital school.
The hospital school at Banner Children’s Hospital at Banner Desert Medical Center ensures that children who are hospitalized can maintain their academic momentum. As part of the hospital’s commitment to meeting the developmental, social and emotional needs of pediatric patients, the school offers a comprehensive educational experience, designed to provide a modicum of normalcy for hospitalized children during what is often a very disruptive time in their lives.
