Established in 1979 by the late Donald B. Kunkel, M.D., the nonprofit Banner Poison Control Center provides a free 24-hour emergency telephone service for residents and medical professionals throughout the state of Arizona. Banner Poison Control Center is staffed by highly-trained nurses who are nationally certified as specialists in Poison Information. These nurses answer calls directly and provide education about and management of poisonings from the public, health care community, fire departments and a wide range of industrial businesses.
Banner Poison Control Center receives more than 100,000 calls annually, 52% of which are actual poisonings, and the Poison Center is able to treat, on average, more than 80% of these calls over the phone without a trip to the emergency department. By abating approximately 40,000 emergency room visits by managing poisonings over the phone, nearly $22 million is saved in consumer emergency room costs each year.
