Launched in 1994, the School-Based Clinics Program represents a collaborative effort between the public school system and the nonprofit Banner Health. Facilitated by Banner Children's Hospital at Banner Desert Medical Center, in partnership with Banner Health Foundation, the program provides onsite primary health care to elementary school children who lack insurance and access to regular care.
At 16 school-based clinics located throughout metropolitan Phoenix, five practitioners serve thousands of children each year from 96 different schools. Without this program, uninsured students would be forced to seek health care through hospital emergency rooms, which is far more costly to health care providers, the children, their families, and ultimately, the community.
