Audio: “What do I get out of volunteering? Everything. It’s rewarding beyond your imagination. The interaction with the staff at Banner Estrella, they are so caring and make you really believe that you’re making a difference. I like to interact with the patients and help there when I can. Perhaps it’s selfish of me to say, but I like to feel good and working there is not really work, it’s just making a big difference.
Every day is different. I’ve done – I’m very blessed and I was brought up in England and taught by my parents and the nuns at the convent I went to, to be aware if somebody is in need and to help where I could.
If you are considering volunteering, I would probably ask you why you wanted to do it to find out if it was just a whim, if it was just something to do. I would explain the rewards of helping people that it’s not, sometimes it’s very, very stressful and sometimes it’s just daily work filling closets with linens; but the interaction with people, knowing that when you’ve finished your shift, you’ve really made a difference.”
